Studio Life

The rhythm of how we train, learn and grow together.

Classes at RSDS are fast-paced while being supportive. They are designed to develop both technical ability and personal confidence. Students may be accelerated to ensure they are challenged appropriately, while care is taken not to overburden them. Performance opportunities are offered throughout the year to build confidence, teamwork and stage experience.

Shared Expectations

Our studio life is grounded in a commitment to personal growth, to the studio, and to the discipline of dance. By enrolling at RSDS, students and families commit to becoming part of this community, united by respect and pride in their training.

We ask all students and families to:

  • Speak positively and respectfully about others.
  • Support fellow students and teachers.
  • Arrive on time, prepared and ready to work.
  • Participate with focus, positivity and respect.
  • Take increasing responsibility for their own learning as they progress.

Ongoing or serious negative behaviour, bullying or disrespect is not tolerated. RSDS reserves the right to refuse or discontinue enrolment where behaviour consistently conflicts with studio values.

Communication is primarily via the studio noticeboard and the BAND app.

Dress and Presentation

Presentation is an important part of dance training and reflects pride in oneself and the studio. Uniform and grooming standards are consistently enforced to maintain focus, safety, and professionalism in class.

Key expectations:

  • Correct dance attire per genre and level
  • Hair neatly secured as required for each class
  • No jewellery, watches or wristbands while dancing
  • Clothing and shoes clearly labelled

Respect & Safety

RSDS is committed to providing a safe, encouraging and inclusive environment. Students are expected to follow the teacher’s direction at all times and contribute positively to the studio environment.

This includes:

  • Physical safety through appropriate footwear, attire and behaviour
  • Emotional safety through respectful communication and conduct.
  • Care for shared spaces — studios, waiting areas and facilities must be left clean and tidy.
  • Extreme heat policies are in place for student safety.

Parents and families play an important role in supporting dancers.

We ask family members to:

  • Treat all teachers with respect and courtesy
  • Support punctuality, preparation and attendance
  • Use designated communication channels for enquiries or concerns

Attendance & Commitment

Regular attendance is essential for progress and group learning. Performance commitments, particularly the end-of-year Showcase, require full attendance at rehearsals and Term 4 classes.

  • Punctuality is expected; ongoing lateness may result in observation-only participation
  • Fees are payable by the due date each term
  • Missed classes are not refundable
  • Long absences may be reviewed at the studio’s discretion
  • RSDS observes public holidays. Cancelled classes may be made up in equivalent classes

Performances & Exams

RSDS offers participation in performances and exams, which builds confidence, discipline and a sense of achievement. Exams follow a structured syllabus and require consistent practice and commitment, including independent practice supported by studio resources.

  • Two studio-wide performance opportunities each year
  • Optional COMDANCE examinations across multiple styles
  • Costumes for performances are high-quality and must be purchased as required.
